Paris. June 29

Today was the day. The day to meet the Kropps in Paris. Hello to the Kropps reading this, welcome to your blog debut. Welcome to your 3 days of fame. You're welcome.

Anyways. Ash and Elise awoke in their mezzanine, only hitting their heads on the roof a couple of times and got ready for the day. Firstly they went to the supermarket close by to get some breakfast goods and nesquik, then to the local patisserie to get the birthday boy (Ash's brother Nick) a cake. We then planned to meet the Kropps for a walking tour around Paris, just after midday. We caught the metro, with no disruptions, into central Paris, got a coffee and met the fam. Several cute family photos and Vegemite transactions later, we left on the walking tour. Also did we mention the heat? Let's say this again. HEATWAVE. It was hot, and pretty funny for the Kropps because they'd just come from the ice age in Australia and had literally flown into Paris at 7am after their 30+ hour flight and were still alive. They also looked reasonably alive. We were both in awe of this achievement and also that they survived the 3 hour walking tour of Paris in the heat.

Welcome to bloge Shaz

Hullo family

Much squeeze

The tour was really good, orienting us with the city, the sights and helping us to decide what to do. We saw the Notre Dame, the Seine, the love lock bridge that is no longer covered in locks, the Louvre and many other key places. After the tour we went to a cafe and planned out our next three days together, to get everything we wanted to do in. We also de sweated, and re caffeined. Can we just point out again that the Kropps were still very much alive at this point, which impressed us so much. We planned to meet again in a couple of hours at the their apartment in Montmartre, in the north of the city, and then find a dinner place to celebrate Nicks birthday.

Oh yeah we at the Louvreeeee

ALL OUR LYF PROBLEMS SOLVED

hey pal eiffel

We metroed back to our place, briefly picked up our cake for Nick and Ash's Moroccan teapot Shaz had kindly let Ash offload to her (by kindly we mean Ash gave her no choice in the matter). Several metro lines later we got to Montmartre and climbed the several hills and staircases to villa ala Kropp. Their apartment was very cool BTW, like ideal location, and big. Also on a slant, which makes finding things easy because they all roll down to one corner of the room. Nick decided on the Classic Italian for dinner, which we were very happy with and we all ordered pizzas, sitting outside to enjoy the weather. After we went back and celebrated with cake, which was so tasty!

Alright Kropps, good apartment location

We left the Kropps to rest up, because the next few days were going to require all our energy. We also needed much sleep and it was hot so that mezzanine was struggle town.

Lots of love,

Lyon to Paris. June 28 (Nicky's birthday!)

Journeying again, this time a quick one to Paris. We basically just slept in in the morning and had a loungey breakfast in bed, eating many things like yoghurt, toasted cheese and fruit, savouring a lay in. Of course we watched our new addiction OITNB as well. We then boarded our train to Paris. Also it was very hot. The beginning of a really fun heatwave. Prepare for many posts coming up of mainly hot weather complaints, as us, and half of Europe, begin to melt of extreme heat, whilst all our Australian pals begin to freeze in their own extreme weather conditions.

Anyway, we got to Paris and tried to figure out the metro so we could get to our place in the 13th arrondissement. For those who don't know, this is kinda South East of central Paris, and isn't an ideal location, but we managed and I mean the plus for us is that it's the Asian district so we could go crazy with food. So we got on the metro, going on one line to a stop that was already about a 1.4km walk to our place. Sadly, as always the case in Paris, the metro was cancelled one stop before our stop. We basically had no idea what was happening and were even more confused when an official at the station seemed to tell us to wait for another, when really we were being told to walk because there are no other trains. So now we had a 2.5km walk. In the heat. With all our luggage. 30+kg distributed on our backs, fronts, shoulders and being dragged. Yay. Also we were glued to google maps because we actually had no idea where to go.

The only and best positive to come out of this was seeing maybe a hundred rollerbladers coming down the road, in what seemed like an organised rollerblading event? We were so confused where they were all coming from and their purpose but were enjoying it A LOT. It almost, almost, made that walk worth it. Almost. We also both decided that, to get through the walk we needed fuel in the form of a mcflurry, so we made a pit stop at a McDonald's to refuel. At this point we also messaged our airbnb host, apologising for our lateness, claiming "train difficulties making us a little late", whilst enjoying our ice cream.

We FINALLY got to our studio, which was thankfully on the ground floor. It's actually really nice, very small but pretty modern and again we scored a mezzanine bed. Ash had to leave in a hurry because her friend Binuri was also in Paris so they could catch up for one night!

On Ash's way to meet Binuri she encountered some more metro fun, having her intended line cancelled as well, due to mysterious backpack, which was just that, a backpack. However, Ash got to the meeting point only an hour late. Good one. In summation, Ash had dinner with Binuri at a really nice Italian restaurant and then got some really good selfies with the Eiffel Tower together.

She got home later to be greeted by Elise and her parents faces on the computer (Skype). And also half of another gigantic meringue that Elise had bought for alone time tasty. Turns out we are too much of a snack team, and she still needed Ash to share.

Lots of love, A&E

Lyon. 27 June

This morning we caught the metro (which BTdubs includes a funicular) up to the hill overlooking Lyon and beyond, where we took in the view from the look out and had a walk inside the cathedral on the hill. It was pretty beautifully decorated, lots of pastel which you know we lurv.

PASTEL 4 DAYZ

Back down the bottom of the hill we took the metro to the centre station on the old town to have a walk around. We immediately got inundated with free things from people on the street, which is always great, and then we wandered around the streets in the direction of a park we had heard of. We picked up some lunch to eat at the park, a pastry and half a roll each from some ideal looking shops.

Hey, we were just there! Good one funicular

ALL THE FREEEEEEEBIIIEEEESSSS

Ash and her horsey

We took the bridge over the river and eventually found the entrance to the park. We found out about the park from our airbnb host, and he had mentioned that there would be some animals around, which we were kind of confused about, but he said it was free, and so we were keen. So after our lunch on a park bench, we decided to venture further in. This is when it got real.
Suddenly, we turn a corner and there’s a giraffe. Ash is a little bit overwhelmed because they are her spirit animal and it was all a bit much. So we stood in the sun for a while trying to get the right photo to express her joy. It was well worth the sunburn, I’m sure.
Eventually we moved on past flamingos to an enclosure with the cutest things ever, the ‘Bat eared fox’. These were entertaining enough, but then a little dog appeared, and the fox walked over to the glass edge of the enclosure and they had a chat and it was magical. We kept looking around the enclosures, although lots of animals were hiding from the sun and heat, and eventually found ourselves at the entrance to the botanical gardens. We went into the glasshouses, which as they were full of giant lily pads and carnivorous plants, were still worth almost passing out in the heat for. We also found an area dedicated to Ash’s fave, the Dahlia.  Amazing! But actually it was, we were having the best day.
After wandering around the huge crystal palace, and amongst the many kids birthday parties, we decided to leave, thinking we has seen everything there was to see. NOPE. Giant paddock full of deer. That’s cool. So we waved at the deer and watched the same little dog from earlier have another conversation with them all (no joke, they all rushed over to it and looked up the wall at it).

DOGE IS BACK

Elise and her new Bambi pals

Walking home, we passed a wedding, which we seem to do a lot these days. We generally stand out the front like creepers as they come out of the church and take photos. We also went to the bakery and got a giant meringue, which we ate that night while watching Orange in the New Black. SO GOOD, AMMIRITE?
