Avignon to Nice. June 24

New day, new place. Continuing on our theme of quickly jumping through France, we headed to Nice today. We've both heard it's real nice in Nice, so thought we'd check out what's so good about this coastal town. We arrived at 1pm at the station and had to meet our host at 1.30pm, and apparently it would take us 25mins ish to get to our place. We could only check in after 6pm so this was just a bag drop and if we didn't make it for 1.30pm we would have to take the bags all the way back to the station for storage. So we hurried. We caught a tram part of the way then had to walk the rest, finally making it in time. After literally dumping our stuff and leaving we walked slowly, allowing the sweat dripping off of us to dry a little. Luckily we found, close by, a delightful gelato store, full of many very very good flavours. Some were a mystery to us, not understanding the French for the weird combinations. Also, please note that speckulas (the yum Dutch biscuit) is a very popular ice cream flavour choice and is even an option for a mcflurry here. Can't say we've tried the mcflurry version of it, I mean why would we not choose Oreo, you know our feels on this. However, the gelato flavour Ash had twice and would recommend, 10/10. After consuming our gelato we really needed Internet because we were planning to meet up with Elise's friend Wes, and didn't know if he'd replied yet. So we went to our faithful McDonalds to poach their internet and toilets. We sadly only ended up using the toilet and eating their fries, apparently the Internet can decided to not work sometimes.

We walked down the Main Street, which is also where the tram runs, down to the main square, Massena place. The buildings were really cool, all in excellent coastal tones of reds, yellows and oranges, making it feel very summery and warm. It also was summery and warm so that helped. On whim we went in Lafayette department store, hoping for both AC and also Internet. We got both plus Ash got a new moisturiser finally. Sadly we left the AC for more exploring, walking through a bit of the old town to the coast and the promenade.

The beach was packed, with people sun baking on the stones that covered it. It was pretty weird seeing people lying on stones, we were both wondering how comfortable this was and if they were being scorched from the sun beaming on the beach. The water, beautiful and blue, was like a giant pool, dropping off from the edge of stones very suddenly and not gradually at all like the beaches we're used to. It looked pretty nice but sadly our bathers were in the apartment back in the north of Nice. We walked further along the promenade, encountering more segways, which apparently are a thing in Europe for touring cities. We tend to disagree, segways are never okay.

We found another McDonald's with working wifi and confirmed a meeting with Wes for dinner. You may think we're obsessed with wifi, but it is struggle town doing anything without wifi and for future reference, the App Triposo has been a dream, it is used offline and maps are brilliant! It includes all the sights, food etc and even has descriptions of them all! Amazing!

Anyway, we ventured from wifi back to Niceland and found a lovely park to sit and relax in for a bit before returning to our apartment to meet our host. After settling in, we left to go meet Wes in the old town. We had a drink then found a restaurant that had the fanciest chairs. We all had the three course set menu, with Elise and I both enjoying the mozzarella, tomato and pesto salad, followed by ravioli and beef stew. So good. And then the dessert. Like a better version of a golden gay time. An ice cream ball, with meringue in the middle, coated in nuts. Incredible. Finally we said our farewells to Wes who was headed to Barcelona the next day and went back by tram to our tiny apartment.

On that note our place is tiny! Like a kitchen and bathroom were all under our bed, as it was a mezzanine. It had a very scary ladder leading up to it and we both struggled with that one. The floor space was minimal with a small couch and table but it was very cute and funny, like a better version of the overnight train we both thought. Pretty fun to mix up our accommodation so much and to go from big and airy to small and hilarious. We are leaving France for Monaco tomorrow so until next post,

Much love A&E
