Lisbon to Madrid. June 15

We woke up this morning to a lovely day, and tried to make the most of our morning before our flight to Madrid. We went our usual way out of our apartment to the central area of Lisbon in search of a bakery or cafe to get some breakfast and Ash really needed one last Portuguese tart before she left Portugal. We found a pretty busy looking bakery/cafe and took a seat. Ash got her tart and Elise got a chocolate croissant and we both shared this delicious thick cut toast with lashings of butter. We're sure you all needed those details of our breakfast but a good breakfast requires description. We then wandered a bit more through this part of the city then back to our place to do a final pack and catch the bus down to the train station, to then catch two trains to the airport.

That's our roof terrace!

Arriving at the airport we were super early, mainly because the actual check in wasn't open until the very last minute. Finally boarding the plane for Madrid, Elise had a bit of a run in with a business class passenger, both having a stand off over who was pushing who. By the way, Elise never actually pushed anyone, the lady shoved her bag away, and she pulled it back into place. She then started pushing Elise down the stairs and Elise obviously was going to stand her ground. Duh. Ash just watched and laughed a lot at the situation. It culminated in Elise being fake coughed on and the lady going to her business seat, which was exactly the same as ours but there was a curtain separating the two classes. Classy lady.

We got to Madrid and caught the airport express bus to a main square nearish to our new apartment. We then walked for about 15 minutes, and hauled our bags up some lovely flights of stairs (recurring pattern in our lives now, we are always on the top floor of apartment buildings). This apartment was not nearly a 10 like our previous but it was in a really good area, and our host told us a restaurant that has really good tapas. After unpacking/relaxing we headed out at around 9pm to the suggested restaurant. It was in this really weird shopping street and we were confused if we were actually being lead to a proper place or not. We finally found it and it was the best ever. We ordered firstly, a jug of sangria. Amazing. Then many tapas. Croquettes, risotto, fried artichokes, these beef and rice things and an amazing guacamole salad. IT WAS INCREDIBLEEEEEEEE. Anyway, we think you understand how we feel about food and this was no exception.

ALL THE SANGRIA

Jamon and artichokes

Bufala, tomatos and guacamole salad

Surprise dish of cured beef and rice aka sushi. I think this was a happy accident at our table
Risotto

We left at 11pm ish and went straight to bed to get ready for our only day in Madrid, and all we had to pack into it!

Lisbon, Sintra. June 14.

This morning we took the train out from Lisbon to a place called Sintra. Sintra is a stunning place full of historical castles and palaces, surrounded by lush green hills. Unfortunately today was also super rainy.

We got off the train and ran through the rain to find the bus that would take us to some of the sights, where we could hop off and hop on another one later. Wet and cold, and in a very fogged up bus, we began our journey through the town, and as we climbed up the mountainside, we wiped viewing holes into the windows.  The view was beautiful, and even though we expected to slide off the hill at any moment, we really enjoyed it. We also have no idea how our pal Jasmine even climbed to all the sights without a bus when she came.

We got off first at the Moorish castle, an incredible medieval fortification that stretched up and around one of Sintra’s hills. Within the first few minutes of walking to the first building, we were completely soaked. Well at least Elise was, as her coat didn’t quite have the waterproofing that she had been expecting. We struggled on, because we knew it would be totally worth it. We got to the main centre of the fortification and were surrounded by the walls and towers, as well as trees and beautiful hydrangeas. We climbed up to the highest point along the ramparts, which we would like to say had an amazing view, but it was mostly clouds. The mist and cloud actually gave it a pretty cool atmosphere though, so we can’t complain!
Elise was clumsy and had a bit of a slip on her way down, so waited for Ash at the bottom while she walked another part of the ramparts. Eventually we both wandered back and waited for the bus to Pena National Palace.

Much wet. Very rain.

From the bus stop we climbed the hill from the gate to the palace. It’s a pretty great sight to come upon and super strange. The palace is a towering, multi-coloured, multi storied complex sitting right on top of a hill, from which you can look down and see the Moorish castle that we had just come from. We toured around the buildings and rooms, some areas were the rooms of the royal family that had been converted from the monastery that had originally stood on the site. This then connected seamlessly to a much newer part of the palace, full of ridiculous paintings and decorations. It’s also under renovation; so many rooms were inaccessible or empty. We finished outside, and decided we hadn’t walked enough ramparts yet, so took the walkway around the main part of the building. The view by now was nil, as we were in the centre of a giant cloud, although this was pretty fun. And we were above the rain!

Good. A++

We left after havin’ a laff at the sculptural entrance to the main buildings of the palace, see below.

Also. GIANT SLUG YOU GUYZZZZ

Walking down from the Palace

Back in town, things were starting to clear up and we decided to get off the bus and walk around to try and find some lunch. The little alleys are pretty lovely and we took a while to just look around, before decided on a tasty looking burger shop. So it was super tasty. Don’t even begin asking why we didn’t look for traditional Portuguese cuisine. We ate burgers with a pattie, salad and chilli con carne and it was super amazing.
After eating we walked through the town and took in the view that was finally clearing as we headed to the station.

Castle on the hill

On the way home we stopped at a food marketplace called time out, with lots of stalls full of amazing food. We weren't super hungry, so we got two slices of pizza and two tasty looking cakes to share back at the apartment. See below. Note* The cookie stack was pretty much coffee pancakes, aka amazing.

Urgh. Amazing

Lisbon. June 13

We had a bit of a late start after our exciting festival night out and took the day to explore Belem, a well known area of Lisbon. It was really close by train, about 7 minutes, and we met Jas at the station to go together. Arriving in Belem we headed straight for the famed Portuguese tart shop, 'Café Pastéis de Belém'. FYI anyone who goes to Portugal, you MUST get these. Basically the best pastry ever, so crispy and flaky. Then they're filled with a delicious, smooth, creamy custard and cooked so they are brown on top. YUM. So we each got one, and the wait was worth it. They were the best we'd had the entire time. (P.S. So you understand how good they were. Elise hates custard. Elise lurved these.)We then headed to a cafe to get some coffee before tackling the sights of Belem.

Classic pink buildings, green guards and yellow tram. Good one Lisbon

LOOK CLOSELY AT HOW GOOD THOUGH

The main sights are the cathedral, which was incredible, huge and very beautiful, and a bit further away the tower. Unfortunately both were closed because it was a public holiday because of the sardine fest. Public for everyone bar the garbage men and street cleaners, they had a fun day ahead of them! Instead we got to go into a small part of the cathedral, which was still impressive and then see the outside of the tower.

Why be closed pretty cathedral?

Some gigantor monument we didn't climb

After this we parted ways with Jas, as she had a street art tour to get to, and Elise went into Museu Coleção Berardo, the modern and contemporary art gallery of Lisbon. She was pretty over the moon to find a wonderful Anish Kapoor work, 'Eyes Turned Inwards', and a James Turrell piece hidden around a corner. The entire gallery was amazing, and the collection was huge, so Elise took about an hour over her estimated time, wooooopppsss. Ash explored the small part of Lisbon some more. The whole town is very quaint and beautiful. It follows the pastel and tile themes of the Lisbon buildings, all really fun and interesting to look at. We both met up again for a lunch just on the Main Street in this tiny restaurant. The young boy who was serving us recommended dishes for both of us, Elise getting a fish dish and Ash, chicken. Both were very tasty. We also asked him for his best pastries, and ended up with literally every kind they served, but we're only charged for two! AMAZING. They we're all delicious, one was the Portuguese tart, another a beer cake, which involves no beer and is pastry with a sweet almond filling. There were also two short bread like biscuits which were incredible, one was very dense and sweet inside, which was both our faves!

After waiting for a good while at the station, we caught the train back to Lisbon and had an early night, attempting to update you all with our blog.
