Leaving the beautiful Amsterdam today to head to Cologne in Germany, we caught the metro to the central station and then an ICE to Cologne, which took a quick 2.5 hrs. We made some delightful friends in Amsterdam before boarding our train however. A group of drunk German men, whose
luggage consisted of an esky, filled with underwear and beer. I mean, what else would you need for a trip away?! They decided we were obviously in need of a chat and spent the time we waited for our train to arrive letting us know about their beers, the football and their general lives. On the train they were so rowdy, we luckily had Awkward to occupy ourselves for the trip.
When we got to Cologne we were crazy confused about how to get to our place. Even though Ash had been here before, we both were basically walking up and down the train station in confusion of where the tram was. We knew which one to catch, but didn't know where the actual tram was. Finally we figured out that the tram was somehow combined with the underground, and so was the U-Bahn, but then becomes the tram when you swap lines?! What is this crazy country. The next major issue was tickets. Like, where do we get them. What do we get. How, why, where, what. After what felt like ages, contemplating tickets and life, we went to the info/ticket desk and just asked for them. Easy. But then for some reason you have to validate them on the train, like in a proper stamping machine. So we stamped them on the train, well Ash did, the machine decided not to work for Elise. At our stop it was a quick walk to our place. It was again on the top floor of the apartment building, but this time, WE HAD AN ELEVATOR. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves, the elevator stopped one floor shy of ours so we had to still walk/carry all bags one flight. Nevertheless, very excited about this lift situation. The top floor also meant we had a panorama of cologne, mmmm so nice.
We were pretty tired, this halfway point of the trip is pretty exhausting, so we got Thai from literally across the road, good one Thai place, and then revisited our old m8, OITNB. Thank god for good internet finally.
Much love,
A&E
