Cologne (Frankfurt). July 14

So we figured out that Germany is actually a pretty small country that has a lot of high speed trains, so we could do an easy day trip to Frankfurt in a 3 hourish round trip. We left a bit later after a sleep in to head to the economic capital of Deutschland. On the journey we enjoyed a delicious hot pretzel from the station and coffee. Arriving in Frankfurt we left he train station to immediately stumble upon a street full of food stalls and trucks. Basically our favourite thing ever. We planned to come back a bit later, after first getting our bearings of the city. Wandering down to the end of the street we also were on the lookout for German SIM cards, we saw a few shops and mental noted to return. We went back to the food stalls, and ended up going with a traditional choice of bratwurst in bread and schnitzel in bread. We shared both and were very happy with our choices, feeling accomplished in cultural eating.

From here we basically wandered around Frankfurt for the rest of the afternoon, going to the old town, eating some Pommes Fritz (fries) there, and exploring Paulskirche (St Paul's church). Then we went to the Dom (cathedral), which was quite understated to many others we've seen. The exterior was red brick too, which is pretty unusual. We then walked across the river Main, over the old bridge to the other side of Frankfurt. It was really cool walking along this bank, because you get a view of the old town in front of the high rises that comprise the new town. We've found that most old towns are pretty distinctly separated from the new towns, but here they seemed to be mingled together really well. It was actually quite beautiful. We then walked back across to the old town via another bridge, Eiserner Steg, which like so many in Europe, is covered in love locks. This one not so well though because there isn't actually room to lock the locks onto the railings, instead they're connected by big loops, which we felt definitely defeated the point. All their love is locked to everyone else's love. Whatttttt.

We then made the best decision of the day and went to a cafe for some afternoon tea. The waitress was so lovely and helped us choose which cakes to order. She advised us away from the vegan cake and towards the cheesecake and a dense chocolate brownie cake. THEY WERE AMAZING. Teamed with our old friend Mr cappuccino and it was a match made in heaven. We basically sat there and enjoyed life until deciding to head to the station and get our SIM cards on the way.

WOAH ARE THOSE DELISH CAKES? Yes, yes they are.

On the train home we say literally at the very end of the train, we could see directly out onto the tracks disappearing behind us. For some reason no one ever reserves these seats and we have no idea why because it's the best section of the whole train.

Back at our apartment we sat on our windowsill, watching over cologne below us and arm dancing the night away.

  1. hahahaha, love the 'cultural eating 1.0' pic, you captured 2 of Nickys favourite foody things in Germany, bratwurst in a roll and 'Back Werk' the ultimate sandwich/roll shop.
