Budapest. August 7

Another wonderful sleep thanks to Mr heat will never end Budapest. Shout out to the cold people I'm Melbourne, lol ITS TOO HOT HERE.

Today Ash got up after a sleepless night and went down to the central market. Basically Vic market. It was produce and food on the bottom level and souvenirs galore up top. Pretty nice to explore even if I was sweating constantly. I then wandered to the National Museum, deciding I really didn't know enough about Hungary. The museum was really really good. It was exactly what I had wanted to see. The first exhibit was about the history of Hungary over several centuries. From the 1500- now basically. Covering things like previous inhabitants to the communist regime that took over the eastern bloc post WWII. Also there was a whole room dedicated to the contributions of Hungarian scientists to the world. I loved this part, not because I love science, well maybe this, but because in the world of science it can sometimes be very, Germans did this, oh this was an American, oh another German. But Hungary had an impressive contribution to science as we know it, more than I expected and I was pretty impressed. The next exhibit went further back in time, from pre human times on the land where Hungary presides to the time leading up to the previous exhibit, covering the many tribes that had settled on the land.

I left the museum pretty satisfied at the many learnings that had happened, but it wasn't over. On the front square outside the museum was a really really good exhibit that pretty much described, through a well designed layout of squares, the communist occupation and impact on the eastern bloc countries, and then these countries and their citizens overcoming this and regaining their freedom. I've seen so many things on this over the time in this area, from East Germany, Prague and now here, but this exhibition really covered the whole issue of all the countries involved. The only bad part was that it was outside and in order to read all the info I had to sweat and die considerably, but worth it.

After this I came back to the apartment and cooked before settling in for the night.

Elise slept in and then met Marcus again at midday. We went to Kerepesi Cemetery, which is one of Hungary’s oldest and best preserved. It’s full of some amazing gravestones and tombs as lots of important writers, artists, architects, composers, scientists and statesmen of Hungary have been buried there. It was pretty cool, but also walking back from there was out of control hot, so we stopped in at another ruin bar that we stumbled upon. This one was called Mazel Tov, and is super nice. We intended just to get a beer, but the menu looked too good so we each got a pita, Elise’s with hummus and falafel which was amazing.
We had coffee and later headed back to Szimpla for a little while to say farewell, as Marcus was leaving Budapest the next morning.

Love A&E

P.S - that's a tomb for one man out there
