Dresden. July 21

Today we made another day trip, this time to the city of Dresden. We were pretty interested to see the city, as after reading so many books about it and its destruction, we wondered how it looked now. Turns out, it’s actually super, super beautiful. Even though it was almost totally destroyed in the war, there were some great old building that survived and have a huge effect on the layout and vision of the city.
When we arrived we walked into town from the station. The first part was super modern, but still lovely with big wide streets and water fountains. The only downside was the ridiculously disgusting swarms of bugs that were all up in our grill.
When we got into town we headed straight for a place for lunch, as the train trip was over 3 hours from Berlin. We found a cool looking Italian place and decided to order two pizzas for flavour variation. HUGE MISTAKE. These pizzas were massive. Unreasonably so. Tasty, but OH MY GAWSH!

After lunch we went for a big ol’ city walk, through the streets and into big old courtyards. We also found a ridiculous church which was super gaudy and pastel and gold and we luuuuurved it.
We also found the art gallery, which looked amazing, but unfortunately because the train trip had taken so long and we had spent the earlier part of the afternoon wandering, it was about to close, so we didn’t go in. So we took some stairs up to a walking area that looks out over the river and the city from behind the gallery and had a super lovely time exploring this area. Eventually we followed this walkway all the way back to the city, taking lots of photos along the way.

Pondering life

Life good

Crystal seat of Elise's dreams

We decided to catch a later train (2 hours later) and walked over the bridge to the New Town. Turns out, New Town is pretty underwhelming and had the worst looking statue in all of Europe. So we sat on a tree lined walkway for about 40 minutes enjoying the shade, and then walked back to one of the main squares in Dresden, where we got super tasty gelato and were scandalised by people’s sandal tans.
Terrible, terrible stature in New Town

URGH. Nope not our feet.

We got a coffee after this, mostly so we could sit inside in the cool and then wandered back slowly to the train station where we took a very slow train back to Berlin.
