Cappadocia (Göreme). September 7

This morning Ash was feeling pretty unwell so we spent most of the morning in bed. We did venture out a bit later and got coffee and tea before walking to the open air museum. The rock formations in Göreme and the region are the result of a volcanic eruption with the ash and lava forming the soft rocks and erosion by wind and weather leaving the caps of the rocks hard, making what is now referred to as the fairy chimneys. The locals were then able to carve out the soft rock interiors to use the caves as houses and churches. These are what make up the museum and many of the churches feature Byzantine art which have retained their vivid colouring because of lack of sunlight reaching into the caves.

Is she even real?

We explored the museum for a couple of hours, but couldn't get any photos inside the churches, except a sneaky one before we knew we couldn't.

After the museum we went back to the hotel for a rest via a gözleme restaurant that was just a couple of ladies making delicious gozleme. Elise devoured a potato and cheese one, loving every bite and promising to return many times.

For dinner we went back to the restaurant we had been the previous night, to get take away chicken rolls, which were crazy delicious. We then had an earlyish night to prepare for the VERY early start the next day.
