Today was our full day to explore Rome. Also it was hot. What's new I guess. Perfect weather for exploring the Colosseum, Forum and walking the many streets of Rome. We got a relatively early start and headed straight for the Colosseum, which although being concerned about queues to get in, we barely had to wait and were quickly in to explore. It was pretty spectacular and amazing to see such an impressive and well known structure in real life, we were both pretty pleased. We wandered around the upper and lower level, trying our best to avoid the sun most of the time and then after thoroughly exploring we left to head towards the Forum.
Ancient pips |
This area spans a much larger distance and took us a lot of sweat and energy to discover most of it. Again, impressive, and we both marvelled at the ancient structures still remaining, with a little time for Elise to release her inner rebel and sit on a non seating spot. Naughty naughty. We spent considerable time there and then needed to bail on account of sweat and heat and also seeing everything. Luckily we live literally down the road so dropped home before heading to a local cafe/deli that we had earlier noticed, for delish paninis. Dream. We also got gelato (woah shocker, we know) and then headed to the Pantheon.

Burial spot for Caeser (salad) |
On the way we found a really cool church, the church of Sant'ignazio DI Loyola, with an impressive ceiling that was painted to appear domed. Such thinkers. We continued towards the Pantheon which was so busy. Inside we admired the giant hole in the ceiling, trying to get all the good shots. Outside we admired the ridiculously old columns and facade before moving on towards Piazza Navona.
Note: not 3D |
On the way we stopped at the best coffee shop in Rome, where we got an espresso to fuel up and power through the day. At the Piazza we were overwhelmed by people. The huge square was full of people selling their wares and tourists getting all the shots. We did this too. We also went into a church within the square and then sat by the fountain in the middle. After spending some time here we went to the Spanish steps and sat for a bit enjoying the afternoon sun, before returning home and getting fries from an Amsterdam chip shop (in Rome?) for dinner. We spent the night packing and generally getting ready for our flight the next day to Athens. As a mid packing break we went out towards the colosseum at night to capture the moon and colosseum together, standing in the middle of the road to get the shots, to the confusion of most people around us. The road wasn't busy though so no confusion needed folk. In the end, the cloud ruined it, and we never got the dream shot.
