Selcuk (Ephesus). October 2

Today we were served another delicious breakfast while we were frantically trying to book our flights from Istanbul to Melbourne. As we were both calling people, trying to organise it, a man came in and stood next to us smiling awkwardly. Turns out it was the owner, come to whisk us away to another accommodation, which came as a surprise as we had never received that ‘confirmation’. We told him we wouldn’t be coming for a while as we were eating breakfast, organising our flights and had to pack everything up.

So eventually we made our way over to the new place, which we immediately realised, was a hostel, but it looked fine and we had been told the accommodation was the same, so we assumed were getting a private room.
Well, we won’t go into details, but it was pretty horrendous, and definitely not the same as the airbnb.

So with half our day lost, we finally made it to the Ephesus museum a few blocks away and had a bit of fun looking around in there with all the statues. It was pretty small and so had time to spare afterwards.

No leg Favre

After the museum we went to lunch at a restaurant that looked average but had really good reviews and it was quite tasty. We had minced meat pide and a sizzling chicken plate.
We did another town walk and then on the way home we found ourselves at the Basilica of Saint John for sunset, which was pretty beautiful. It’s believed that Saint John spent his last years in the Ephesus region (like Mary, hence the Virgin Mary House), and that he was buried in the slope of the Ayosolug Hill. 300 years later a church was build on the site and then in 527-565 AD during the reign of Emperor Justinian, it was changed into a huge basilica. Eventually when the Turks invaded, it was changed into a mosque and later became unusable due to earthquakes.

We went back to the hostel that evening, not feeling like dinner.
