Florence. August 25

This morning we walked down to the Duomo and joined a very long queue that ran along the entire length and around the back because we were that desperate to climb the 467 steps to the top.
We waited in the heat for quite a while and eventually got to the door where you immediately start climbing up the side of the cathedral. You come out at the bottom of Giorgio Vasari’s (although he really just designed it while his student Frederico Zuccari painted most of it) fresco of the Last Judgement, which covers the inner part of the cupula (dome). After having a chance to walked around half of this you go back between the inner and outer shells and continue the very steep and cramped climb to the lantern at the very top. The views from the top are ridiculously beautiful. You get a full 360 of Florence and Tuscany beyond and it takes a while to convince yourself to walk back down.

We live next to that dome!

We got to the bottom and had a bit of a wander through the smaller streets around the centre of Florence and got ourselves a typical lunch of pizza and gelato before heading off to see the Accademia gallery.

We got to the Accademia Gallery and again, waited in the sun for one bagillion years. But when we got inside it was super worth it because we love creepy renaissance paintings and also because of David. Yep, old mate Michelangelo’s David. So that was a dream.

We decided it was coffee o’clock and went to the market we had visited a few days prior and sat in the food court (which is full of amazing local food and produce) and had coffee and shared some cake. We sat here for a while because originally we had planed to come here for dinner as we heard the stalls were a great place to eat as well as being cheap, but we couldn’t wait until dinner, so decided we would just come back later.

When we came back to the market for dinner we shared some Napoli gnocchi which was super delish. We also had a glass of chianti wine each because duh.

We waddled home after this to bed.

Love A&E
